So you want to look younger? Who doesn’t! While you can take the risk of following youtube “DIY tutorials”, wouldn’t you rather have the pleasant experience of having someone that knows what their doing bring a style that’s all your own to life? Let’s face it, like all things in life, you get what you pay for, and a mistake could not only end up costing you more in the end, but leave you with preventable damage. These tips will help you see the do’s and don’ts for your individual style.

1. Go for the CHOP

Too often, women keep their hair long even though the length may not be flattering. Let’s face it, as women getting older means we may start to lose hair. Hair that is overgrown and not given proper salon care can start to look like thin blades of hay. Even though, growing out those long locks may have taken years, it could be time to go for the chop! If your stylist recommends going for a cut, don’t panic. Bob styled cuts or even pixie cut will shave years off your look. A short cut can not only give a younger appearance, but it will save hours of styling time in some cases. Jamie Lee Curtis is a perfect example of how a pixie cut can give your look more youth.

2. Color Is Key

I’m sure you’ve heard that certain colors don’t work on certain skin tones. This is true. One sure way to make yourself look older is to color your hair using a shade or tone that isn’t right for your skin. If the color is too dark, your face will appear washed out, leaving you looking pale and corpse-like. On the other hand, if the color is too light it will reveal all of your skin’s impurities. Your stylist might recommend more than one shade to give you a more dimensional color. This may not be ideal for everyone’s lifestyle or wallet. Different women have different needs and goals. Be sure to sort through all your options with your stylist. By the way, you can previously “try on” trendy colors with The Right Hairstyles’ free Virtual Makeover.

3. Balayage Is Your Buddy

To keep hair maintenance low, some women will just cover any incoming grays with a shade that’s similar to their natural color or just a solid color in general. Believe it or not, a balayage highlight can be simpler to maintain than a solid color! One of stylists main tips is that going lighter gives you a younger look. Highlights help blend out incoming grays and provide a more youthful appearance. The definition of balayage is “painted on”. So a balayage highlight can be painted in specific areas to help accentuate your best features. The result gives a blended, graduated look with more dimension than traditional highlights.

4. Try Volume Boosting Products

Frizz is out! The 80s have made their comeback, but frizzy, permed hair has not. Voluminous hair doesn’t have to be dull and crispy. When using the right products you can achieve voluminous hair without the poof and still add shine. Sexy Hair Big Volume shampoo and conditioner is a salon favorite. If you prefer your shower products to be cruelty free you can also try Verb Volume shampoo and conditioner. As for leave in volume products, Moroccan Oil Thickening Lotion and Root Boost are must have items. Don’t be afraid to whip out that round brush and blow dryer, but keep in mind, creating sexy voluminous hair doesn’t mean making yourself look taller.

5. Less Is More!

One sure way to achieve a younger look is to pay attention to current trends. Today everyone is going for that “I woke up like this” style. Having over polished or perfect hair can appear outdated. Textured, messy styles create the illusion of being aloof. Celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker, Madonna, & Charlize Theron are advocates for textured waves. Yes, this means, if you choose to, you can stop hiding those gray hairs! Though current trends have veered away from the fake gray look, natural silvers are absolutely in! So go ahead and rock some beach texture on your natural white hair.

6. Embrace Your Era

There’s nothing like aging yourself with an outdated hairstyle, but that doesn’t mean you can’t rock your finger waves. Retro is sophisticated & there’s a new way to wear almost every era! Keep in mind that these hairstyles may have evolved and become a bit more modern. For example, pin curls and vintage waves have come a long way over the years. These styles have evolved into a whole new genre known as Pinup or Rockabilly. Although the technique remains the same, modern twists have made this classic much more edgy and sleek. In fact, LA is home to several salons that specialize in creating these specific styles.

7. Try Some Extensions

We all know what it’s like to have a signature look. No matter how thin or scraggly, some women simply cannot part with their hair. If this sounds familiar, it may be time to look into getting extensions. Although, extensions require a considerable amount of maintenance and budget, this may be the only way to keep your mane looking thick and youthful. Hair health concerns rise when thinking about extensions. However, current techniques offer countless ways of wearing extensions that will not affect the longevity of your current hair at all. The Halo extension can be worn daily with ease. Tape in extensions are very gentle on thin hair, are easy to have installed, and can last up to 12 weeks! With so many different types of extensions, make sure to thoroughly research which are right for you.

8. Let Your Stylist Be Your Guide

More often than not, the beauty industry can feel like a maze. There are lots of routes to take and directions to go, but we can’t always tell which ones will leave us stuck in a rut. Thankfully, we have stylists. These angelic professionals have chosen their career because of their passion for beauty and creativity! A trusting relationship with your stylist and frequent salon visits are crucial for achieving your hair goals. Ask your stylist for tips on what’s right for you and your lifestyle, whether it be a new haircut or that color you’ve been dying to try, your stylist can lead you in the right direction.

9. Think Outside Your Box

It is increasingly common for women to assume they’re too old for certain styles. However, venturing out of your comfort zone could leave you loving your hair more than ever! An edgy undercut or daring unicorn hair are no longer just for women in their 20s. Making a bold statement with your style will make you feel younger and liberated. Always wanted to put that streak of purple in your hair? With the right stylist, your only limit is your imagination. So be bold, be brave, and make a statement with your hair. Even if all you’re trying to say is how much you love the color green.
