Wavy hair, don’t care! When you have naturally wavy hair, it can be hard to find the right hair products and tools to use that will work with your hair type. Some women have hair that’s not quite straight but not super curly either. Wavy hair is its own type, whether you have fine strands or thick locks. It can be hard to keep your locks nourished and static free. Investing in the right hair products, finding your own personal hair care routine, mastering your blow-dryer and doing a research will be very useful. The struggle is real with waves! However; there are tips and tricks for naturally wavy hair that will work wonders!

1. Use a Wide Tooth Comb

It’s no secret that when you have wavy hair, it can be hard to brush because thick and wavy hair gets snarls easier than other hair types. If you don’t want to break a brush, or hurt your head, invest in a wide tooth comb. This is a tip from all hair stylists and beauty experts. It makes the process of brushing wet, damp or dry hair much easier – and effortless. It’s good for your hair as well, because you keep it strong and intact.

2. Nourish Your Hair

Just like we must nourish our bodies, we must nourish our hair too! It’s important to find a leave-in conditioner that you trust and love. We need to keep our hair hydrated and fresh with a deep nourishing mask, and condition regularly, every week. Hair professionals recommend choosing a sulfate free shampoo to avoid your wavy hair becoming dry. Look at the ingredient list on the bottle before you buy your shampoo, and check to see if it has a lot of glycerin. (That is good and what you want!) Also nourish with shea butter and essential oils. Hair care industry experts all say it’s best to use a hair mask once a week. It’s also wise to invest in a satin pillow case. It is supposed to protect your hair from outside. And when you load nutrients into your locks, your hair will stay healthy and strong from inside – maintaining the look you want!

3. Take Your Time

Good things in life take time and require your patience. Your hair is no exception, and you’ll need lots of patience. Whether you’re washing your hair, using leave-in treatments, styling it or simply brushing your lovely locks – it requires time. It can be tough when you want to get to work quickly or to go somewhere, and are in a time crunch – so, try setting time aside specifically for your hair. When you’re blow drying your hair, for example, if you use a high speed, it can cause frizz and other hair problems you don’t want. It’s like when you cook something on a high temperature, it can get overcooked and lose its flavor. Set some time aside daily to be able to brush your hair out, to distribute its natural oils and keep it soft and smooth.

4. Put Blow Dryer on a Cold Setting

Baby, it’s cold outside! Although the weather changes, hair care experts say that you should put your setting on cold on your blow dryer when you’re using it. If you have fine wavy hair, sometimes it can end up frizzy after styling. This is where the cold setting comes in handy. A lot of people know we need to let our hair cool when it’s setting. However; if you have wavy hair, it’s good to use the cold button throughout your entire blow-dry. When blowing out your own hair, it’s crucial to flip the front section of hair that frames your face and curl it away from the face to get a nice angle of hair that frames your face perfectly! It will stand out from the rest of the bounce and curls you put in your hair. If you don’t want curls and are looking to blow dry your hair straight, it’s best to direct the blow dryer down your hair all the way. This means extending from your roots to your ends. When doing your hair yourself, break it off into 2-3 sections to do at a time. Whether your hair is thick or fine, you need products for wavy hair – especially while blow drying it. If you have fine strands, use a light hold mousse or gel. For thick hair, you need to use an extra strong product.

5. Keep Your Hair Hydrated

Healthy hair is all about keeping it hydrated. It’s imperative to deep condition to maintain the health of your hair and prevent it from drying out. If your hair is already dry and/or damaged from color treatments and such, then it is best to use a repair hair mask first. Then afterwards get on a regular routine of conditioning. Some people do it once a week, others once a month. Develop a hair regime and routine that suits you best! The sun and other natural factors can affect your hair; therefore, it’s good to use UV protection for your hair if you’re going to be outdoors a lot. Of course, the sun is good as a source of Vitamin D, but too much sunlight will take the nutrients out of your hair. Just like we use sunscreen for our skin, we can use protectant sprays for our hair to prevent the sun from drying out our locks. When we are using hot styling tools, it’s crucial to apply a protectant and a finishing spray. Thermal sprays will let you use your blow dryer, curling iron and hair straightener without any problems!

6. Research New Products Before Usage

Everybody’s hair is different, so what products work for someone else, may not work for your hair. It’s important to do a lot of research before you try using new products for yourself. Read what hair care products contain, just like when grocery shopping you read the ingredients. Look for strengthening silk proteins and glycerin to prevent your waves from becoming frizzy. It’s also a very good idea to use natural products as much as you can! If you can use commercial products that don’t have alcohol or sulfate in them, that’s great, because these can dry out and damage your hair. Whether it’s a shampoo, conditioner, or treatment – research before using. Even if it’s a great product and experts like it, it may not work for your hair type. It’s important to spend time figuring out what works for you, without damaging your hair, so, try a bunch of different products.

7. Heavy Duty Hair Tools

When styling your naturally wavy hair, you need heavy duty tools to carry out the task. Invest in a high power blow dryer with a diffuser attachment. (Make sure it has a cold setting!) You’ll also need a high quality straightener and curling iron for when you’re styling your locks straight and curly. Don’t forget that it’s also important to have a heat protection spray and a shine mist to use when styling your hair with hot tools.

8. Take Caution with Your Towel

Who knew a towel could be dangerous? It may seem like no biggie to dry your hair with your towel intensely after showering, but hair care experts say it’s best to blot your hair with a towel. It’s also good to use microfiber towels. Don’t put too much force or you can cause damage to your strands and make it difficult to brush and style your waves. When your hair is damp, it’s the perfect time to apply cream. If you can, also wait until your hair is 90% dry before you begin blow drying it. (If you can just let it air dry, even better!) When you begin to do your hair, use a paddle brush to smooth it and a round brush for the blowout. You’ve been warned about the towel rush!

9. All You Need is Love and Lotion

When you have naturally wavy hair, it often becomes frizzy or static. The solution is to put some lotion on your hands and run your fingers through your hair. This trick takes away the static! Also, apply a dry oil to your hair to prevent frizz and keep natural oils flowing. This quick tip comes in handy. Ta-da!
