The mohawk is a top favorite hairstyle for men and women. Originally it suggests that you shave the sides of your head, leaving a stripe of hair, running from the center of your forehead to the back of your head. Today the original version of the mohawk isn’t used so broadly, especially by women. We have other genius types of this hairstyle, for example, the fauxhawk, that actually has the same idea but looks much more appealing, because no shaving is required. You simply make your sides sleek, whether it’s short hair, braiding or hair, raised up in an updo. Anyway, if you are a fan of the traditional mohawk, we are sure you know how to present it in the best light. In this article we want to show you how versatile mohawks and fauxhawks can be. You can create so many looks, each one of which will be absolutely exceptional.

Do Mohawks Suit Everyone?

Well, it opens the sides of your face, revealing beautiful cheekbones and the jawline, simultaneously creating volume on top. That’s why if your face is broad, let’s say very round or typically square, the mohawk isn’t the best option for you, because in this case you need to cover the sides of your face with curls or straight tresses, elongating your face and creating an illusion of a perfect oval. Likewise, if your face is oblong, any additional volume on top will make it even longer. So for you it’s also better to consider more flattering hairstyles, like those creating any horizontal lines (bangs, waves, curls, width on the sides of your face, etc.)

The mohawk is pretty universal, meaning you can look bold and even aggressive with some versions of the mohawk, while others make you more feminine and sexy. You can play with color accents, style your tresses straight, weave them, braid and much more. Below you will find a set of images with very different looks, suitable for all ages, hair lengths, hair types and personal preferences.

1. Messy Hawk for Women

When older generations think of mohawks, they likely think of severe, stiffly spiked styles that defy society. Fortunately, today’s mohawks are much cooler than this and are ideal for both men and women. Long and messy is a fun new way to update the classic Mohawk concept.

2. Gelled Mohawk Styles

A little bit of hair product can go a long way when it comes to a faux hawk or other style. Color only your tips to add some “pop” to your final look, or choose to use a product only on the top of your hair. Of course, if you choose to, gel all over for a more serious look that will last all day.

3. Steel Colored Mohawk Hair

This hair color will inspire envy in your edgiest friends. It’s a difficult ombre to explain, so if this is a color that you’re after, be sure to bring in a picture or two. When you style the mohawk, blow dry the hair on the sides downwards with a flat brush and forward on top with a round brush.

4. Styled Mohawk

Bring some style into your Mohawk by using hairpins and setting spray. Twist, curl and secure wherever you feel led and show off a unique look that is not easily duplicated. This works especially well if you have straight hair of fine or medium texture.

5. Mohawk with Length and Frosted Tips

Take a tip from nature with this skunk-inspired hairdo that’s sweet and fun. Get your top hair bleached with about an inch of darker roots. Be sure to add in some cool undercut designs along the side and use plenty of volumizing spray to really get a quality height for the final look.

6. Mohawk with Vibrant Hues

There is a wide variety of faux hawks and more traditional hawks to try. But when you’re truly ready to stand out from the crowd, go with a Mohawk style that lights up the room with color. Choose an electric blue, hot pink or traffic cone orange for a fun fashion statement all your own.

7. Side Mohawk

Whimsical and edgy at the same time, a side Mohawk haircut really allows you to express your creativity. Experiment with different designs, angles and hair color to really have fun with this cool look. Depending upon the texture of your hair, you could rock this hawk in a variety of ways.

8. Stunning Silver Mohawk

So pretty! Mohawk hairstyles are a no brainer for trying beautiful new colors. This silver shade is gorgeous (especially when paired with gray eye shadow and orange lip). For the magically wispy styling, employ a large barrel curling iron and a decent amount of hairspray.

9. Textured Blue Mohawk

Most images of inspiring mohawks don’t show much in the way of bangs. But with bangs, mohawks take on a cute pixie look. Ask your stylist for longer hair on top and shorter bangs in the front. Style the bangs forward on to the forehead and blow dry the hair on top up and forward.

10. Designed Mohawk Hair

Mohawk designs can be as wild as you want them. The most important thing for any type of edged designs is geometry, because it looks the chicest. The curvy lines and triangles created in this look are super cool. To style the hair in the middle, employ a workable gel that has great hold.

11. Soft Spiked Mohawk

Keep things soft and approachable, sporting a “spiked” Mohawk with little to no product involved. The lift comes from the cut and backcombing more than from gel or spray, allowing your Mohawk to be soft and touchable.

12. Mohawk with Multiple Braids

Create both thin and chunky braids all over the head for a great Mohawk style. Best of all, this hairstyle doesn’t require an actual cut, allowing you to keep your more traditional hair and potentially your job. Pull hair into this beautiful braided chaos when you’re feeling a little rebellious.

13. Short Mohawk

You can create a subtle Mohawk with short hair, creating a whole new look you’ll love. Separate a top portion of your hair in the center and either twist or braid the hair immediately on both sides along the parts. Brush back the top section and use some product to hold it in place. This faux hawk is easy to achieve on short hair, and yet it still allows you to have a more mainstream style when you feel like it.

14. Black Mohawk Hairstyle

Black hair can look gorgeous in a laid back Mohawk-inspired hairstyle. Bring your curls to the front, allowing them to graze your forehead and add just the right amount of charming sass to the final look.

15. Braided Mohawk Haircut

Bring a feminine touch to your Mohawk with an accent braid. Braided mohawks are fun to wear and allow you to express your girly side without having to wear hair long and traditional.

16. Mohawks with Curls and Design

Curly mohawks are super trendy, and they happen to look fabulous on natural hair. If you’re looking for a fun and funky style all your own, get inspired by this natural Mohawk that sports both curls and shaved designs along the scalp line.

17. Spikey Mohawk Hairstyles

Jack Frost-inspired hair can keep you cool this summer as you go about your days. Dye your hair a gray or ice blue for a chilly first impression that will quickly melt with your warm smile.

18. Mohawk Haircut with Blonde Highlights

This ombre-ed Mohawk is stunning! The natural base color blends into honey brown with bright blonde tips. The result is a pretty, unique hairstyle that catches the light and people’s attention! You will definitely need to blow dry your hair to achieve this height. Try holding it straight up with a big round brush as you are drying.

19. Versatile Mohawk

Some mohawks allow you to have a variety of looks, as exemplified by this bleached blonde hawk. Wear it loose or separate it into several tight braids across the head. Fun for beach trips or a day of relaxing at home, this Mohawk braids with shaved sides can adapt to fit your mood – something that’s definitely a bonus with an otherwise restrictive hairstyle.

20. Bleached Mohawk

While some Mohawk wearers opt for bright colors to make a statement, consider bleaching your hair blonde or even gray. The look of premature gray is very popular with young women right now, and if you are of a darker ethnicity, your black Mohawk will look completely revamped without a lot of effort when you strip it of color.

21. Lavender Ombre Dream

Ombre and the color lavender: dreamy on their own, extra dreamy when combined. Proof? The mohawk below. This combo softens the usual hard edge of the mohawk, resulting in a lovely, delicate swoop of color and style.

43. Spiky Mohawk with Pink Peekaboo Streaks

Mohawk haircuts give you a great opportunity for playing with texture. The sides of this haircut are kept perfectly smooth and sleek, while the front section has a little bit of wave and separation to it. To try it out, use a fine tooth comb and gel on the sides and a texturizing spray for the top section.

44. Braided Mohawk Hairstyle

Mohawk braids are just about the coolest thing ever. We’re not all bold enough to try out a real mohawk, but that doesn’t mean that girly girls can’t have some fun trying out the style. To create this look, make a fishtail braid down the back of your head and french braids on the side. Then pull on the fishtail braid for volume.

45. Quick and Easy Mohawk Hairstyle

A faux mohawk can be a complicated affair, or it can be super easy like this version. Here’s how to get the look: after blow drying, part your hair at the “corners” of your forehead and then section off the middle section with a big clip. With that hair out of the way, apply some braiding pomade to the side hair and french braid down and around each ear. Next tease the upper section.

46. Cute and Curly Mohawk Hairstyle

Mohawk hairstyles for black women are a fun way to experiment with volume. African American hair has a great texture. Whether you work with your natural curls or curl your hair first, you will be able to achieve a lot of height on top. Instead of braiding hair near the ears downwards, braid it upwards to add to the beautiful mass of curls.

47. Glamorous Mohawk Updo

For girls in need of a unique style for a night out (or a bold way to style a day time dress), this pretty Mohawk updo is a must-try. To get the look, make a large fishtail braid in the center and two small french braids on each side, tucking the ends under. Make sure to add in a texturizing product designed for braiding before you begin.

48. Lavender Braided Mohawk Hairstyle

While it might not look like it at first glance, this is a braid! It will definitely take practice to master the art of the deconstructed, knotted braid, and you’ll need a key product in your arsenal as well: a braiding pomade. Working this type of texturizing product in your hair helps to hold looser styles.

49. Bleached Feminine Mohawk

Mohawk hairstyles for women are all about personality. This look is so cool because of the spikiness in the thick hair. If you have thick hair, you won’t need to blow dry it to get volume. Instead, simply let it air dry and use a combination of gel and hairspray to keep it standing upright.

50. Platinum Mohawk with Geometric Designs

If you want a mohawk hairstyle that is very unique, ask your stylist for designs on the side and no line of demarcation. Here the designs are cut right into the hawk part. This is some really masterful design work—with triangles and arrows that fit like puzzle pieces.

51. Long Platinum Mohawk with Faded Sides

Mohawks are typically short, but they look particularly amazing when they are cut for long hair. The other thing that makes this version stand out is the high taper fade on the sides. Instead of just having shaved hair and long hair, there is inch-long hair that fades out to skin.

52. High Mohawk with Side Undercut and Shaved Design

Thick haired ladies will look lovely with a volumized Mohawk that really shows off this cool style. Experiment with different undercut designs or sport a more natural Mohawk by keeping the sides short but casual. Use some volumizing gel to give your Mohawk some serious height.

53. Blonde Mohawk

You don’t always need fun colors or a super edgy fade to get a Mohawk that looks awesome. A simple blonde Mohawk on the longer side can look girly, fun and expressive. Skip the styling product if you want hair to fall naturally in its own unique way.

54. Curl–Accentuating Mohawk

Curly Mohawk styles add a touch of sweetness to an otherwise edgy look. Indulge in some head designs on the sides to create a signature look. If you were blessed with natural curls, allow your Mohawk to grow long in the front for an innovative twist on traditional bangs.

55. Long and Lovely

A long hair Mohawk can be really pretty with the use of some strategically placed bobby pins and a carefully styled braid. Again, this style doesn’t require an actual Mohawk cut, so the look is lovely…but temporary.

56. Innocent and Sweet

Could you believe you may look innocent with the mohawk? Yes, it can be very soft, relaxed and pleasing. Blonds with short hair should try this look for a change.

57. Funky Pink

Pink has always had a weakness for rock-chic hairstyles. With fine hair like hers a spiky pixie or a Mohawk are the best options. This cool platinum Mohawk features the neat short sides and voluminous textured top fading towards the nape.

58. Extravagant Purple Mohawk

Kelly Osbourne arrived to the 66th Emmy Awards ceremony rocking a purple dress with a real purple Mohawk to match. The accurate lines dividing the undershave and long locks, the impressive top styled with a sweep to one side, the perfect make up and refined accessory choice built Kelly’s chic red-carpet look.

59. Sunset

A successful mixture of color accents can turn a simple haircut into a piece of hairdressing art. Nature is an amazing wellspring of ideas. It has already generated the most unique color combinations, tested by ages.

60. Whipped Cream

This light and fluffy fauxhawk is meant for girls, who like the mohawk but would rather prefer to look tender, sexy and feminine than bold and aggressive.

61. Chaos

The mohawk is usually featuring locks sticking upwards in one direction. Here Rihanna presents an interesting trendy version of the fauxhawk with front top locks, fallen at random for a mussy stylish look.

62. A Thrilling Fauxhawk

This is a truly thrilling fauxhawk, featuring intricate braiding with real chain plaited in. Looks showy, fantastic and worth of mimicking, definitely.

63. A Luxurious Mane

We are sure you are eager to see some decent examples of real mohawks. This one is an adorable original mohawk with an undershave for girls with beautiful thick hair.

64. Braids and Twists

A fauxhawk hairstyle provides freedom for self-expression: you may combine showy braids, cool twists, highlights, short and long hair in one amazing hairstyle!

65. A Classy Wavy Mohawk

Here is another soft version of the mohawk. Some days you’d rather feel like weaving your top tresses into supple waves than leaving them sticking out hawkishly.

66. A Divine Mohawk-Like Updo

Chic in every line, curve and and curl makes a perfect updo. The mohawk is a rewarding source of inspiration. You can come up with something truly exceptional like this.

67. Cool Mohawk Updo

Jennifer Lopez has turned so many heads at her statement Mohawk updo, that we simply can’t leave her out of our list. The fabulous volume on top and ideally sleek sides build a sculptural look and present her lovely face shape in the best light.

68. Short Curly Mohawk

For the Grammy Awards Alicia Keys remained loyal to the deep blue and Mohawk. But this time she had her longer locks cropped and opted for a curly Mohawk with a fluffy top.

69. Safety Pins as Hair Accessories

As for the most extravagant version of all Kelly Osbourbne`s hairstyles, it suggests braiding your Mohawk into small braids and securing their ends with simple safety pins. The good news is never before have your hair accessories been that cheap!

70. Pink and Purple

Sheridan Smith is one more representative of the purple hair fan club. Her textured hairstyle in this picture stands out with the small temple undercuts and a more sophisticated color blend: the transition of pinks and purples are rather unusual but, unquestionably, sweet.

Well, we are sure even if you were strongly against the mohawk, this display has sparkled a few ideas you’d like to try. Do not restrain yourself: changing your looks is fun and exciting, and you know that yourself.
